No. El soporte extendido de SQL Server 2016 terminó el 14 de julio de 2026. Do I need anything besides the license?
Yes: one SQL Server CAL per user or device accessing the database. CALs are not included and must be purchased separately from an authorized Microsoft reseller.
Does it run on Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022?
No. Microsoft only supports SQL Server 2016 on Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 and Windows 10, always with Service Pack 3. For Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022, choose SQL Server 2019 or later. 👉 See SQL Server 2019 Standard
How do I enter the key?
During setup, at the Product Key step. If Express or Evaluation is already installed, go to Installation Center → Maintenance → Edition Upgrade and enter the key. No online activation required.
What are the Standard edition limits?
It uses the lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores and up to 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance, enough for most SMBs and business applications.
How is it different from SQL Server Express?
Express is free but caps each database at 10 GB, uses at most 4 cores and has no SQL Server Agent. Standard removes the size cap and uses much more CPU and memory.
Does it still receive updates?
No. SQL Server 2016 extended support ended on 14 July 2026. The license is permanent and the product keeps working, but there are no more free security patches (Microsoft’s paid ESUs require Software Assurance). If you need active support, choose SQL Server 2017 (until October 2027) or 2019 (until January 2030).
